Hi! I'm new here and would like to ask some advice from the experts here. I am planning to buy a shihtzu dog. The question I have is whether it is more advisable to buy a puppy or an adult shihtzu? Someone is selling me his 2 years old adult male shihtzu. My grandparents' own a shihtzu and so far, the dog is friendly to everyone. However, Im not sure if it's a good idea. The reason for him in selling the dog is because he wanted to concentrate on another breed of toy dog. However, I am not sure if it is advisable for me to buy an adult one. What are the pros and cons in buying a puppy vs an adult one? If I decide to get the adult one, will I be encountering difficulties, i.e. training, adjustment, loyalty of the dog? Please help me in this. Your expert advice on this will be appreciated. Thanks!

hi there!
welcome to the group.
This forum has been quiet for a long time now.
Anyway, feel free to post as I am always checking the site nowadays.
About your concern, it is okay (and i feel it is better) to purchase an older shih tzu.
Shih tzu are loving animals. They can settle with the new master easily.
Since the shih tzu is smart, you would not have trouble training him or her.
I suggest you spa/neuter your shih tzu for lesser problems in the future.

Hi! Thanks so much for responding at once. If you believe that an adult shihtzu is better than a pup, then I will seriously consider it. The reasons why I am hesitant to buy an adult shihtzu is that it might have developed loyalty to its previous owner and treat us differently (i think this is true for some breeds?). Another is training, particularly, toilet training. This is important since my parents are particular about this. I cannot have him poo/pee anywhere inside the house. I do not intend to let him stay outdoors... so it is important. Would you have any suggestions as how I can toilet train him? Is the method similar to that of a puppy? Is an adult one easier to train than a pupply? Also, how and where do i spa/neuter him? I wanted the dog as a pet only, so I think that is a good idea to avoid potential problems in the future. Thanks so much for helping me with my questions.

Thanks so much for helping me with my questions. Actually, ok lang naman na ikaw na ang maging new owner kase shih tzu naman is adaptable to changes (true rin na some breeds hindi) Training him is done with persistence, patience and love. ganon lang. kelangan lang na lagi mo pagawa sa kanya ang kelangan. like kung gusto mo sa labas na lagi siya mag release, eh di dalhin mo siya outside sa isang sched lang. paulit ulit lang and makukuha rin niya. same with kung iba ang gusto mo like, paper training. ako i use basahan kase meron long coat mga shih tzu ko. kung meron mistake along the way. DO NOT show ang clean up sa shih tzu mo kase he would think na he was able to get attention (mahaba ang kwento rito basta dont show him ang paglinis). put him muna sa ibang room na hindi niya makikita. use domex and not lysol ok. (long kwento pero maniwlaa ka na lang saken. totoo naman to eh, promise) hehehe
